Restaurants that throw the food - this one Sushi and steak

Harus Steak Sushi Plate on Urbanspoon We have been to several of these “Asian throwing “ restaurants in the Kansas City area and Lawrence. We try these place if we have a coupon. Many times it is the same show. They cut up your meal, show their skills at twirling their pepper shakers, toss a piece of seafood, beef or etc to the participant in the area (if they so choose) so that it lands in your mouth ( if you are lucky) and then you eat the meal. This is exactly what went on here , nothing less, nothing more. My wife’s chicken was good and my steak was good. I caught my piece of steak and she deferred. The soup and the rest of the meal is fine. Like I said, I don’t come to these places without a coupon. I am still searching for one of these places that really has a different menu/ entrees and “something level above these Asian throwing places. If you have a been to a better one let me know.

Restaurant Review : Old-Country-Buffet-Shawnee-Mission

Old Country Buffet on Urbanspoon This buffet has been around for many years. We were here awhile back but not lately. If I frequent a buffet I usually go to one of my favorite like Cinzettis or if I try a regular all you eat buffet, Golden Corral (Olathe). I usually like to sample many items but usually have one to three that are “killer items” that are reasons to return. I remembered that the food at this Shawnee Mission location and I wanted to see how it fared since then. I should have taken a cue from one of the words in the title (Old) though and gone elsewhere as it just is not to par with the other buffets in terms of taste, quality or quantity of items and "bang for your buck". I am sorry to say it does not “stack” up to the others that are in the same vein (Ryan’s, Old Country etc). The first thing I noticed is that the price ($11) includes the drink. A little more pricey then Golden Corral (I usually just get water) but I was “still game”. The food is bountiful but there are not as many selections compared to the other buffets. The only “killer” item was the saucy, sweet tomato Beef ribs which were meaty and excellent. I did try the salads and other items but nothing really thrilled me. The tastes just were not there. The desserts well the bread pudding (which I love and make my own) was a little runny and did not have a much flavor as I thought. I did however try a root beer float as did my wife . The Barque’s root beer was creamy and we tried the soft vanilla ice cream with it. We both agreed that hard ice cream is better with a root beer float. We also both agreed that there was not enough notable dishes on this spread for us to come back. Nice try but next time it will be one of my favorite buffets or a new one with a few more items that take eating to a different level of gusto.

Here is more about this root beer adventure, additional information from another posting which included some history about root beers, links to other pieces of interesting information and more.

Restaurant Review : Jasper's Italian not your standard Italian restaurant

Jasper's on Urbanspoon My wife's monthly dinner and kibbitz group targeted Jasper's. The menu does have some interesting "takes" on Italian fare by adding different sauce, combinations or ingredients. She chose the SCALOPPINE DI VITELLO DON SALVATORE (Medallions of veal with artichoke hearts and mushrooms in garlic scented Chianti wine sauce. She loves artichoke hearts and that's one of the reasons. She brought some home for me to sample and it was "melt in your mouth". The artichokes did " meld" well with the sauce and the tender veal. Someday I am going to try to find a recipe and make it for her. In any case,
most of the meals are around this range $19.95 or higher. This is higher then most Italian restaurants entrees so its not on our short list to go together. Until that eventual time that we might go, I will look for Jasper Mirabile, Jr.'s recipes which are posted at the Hen House restaurants. I've already started sampling more of his recipes by way of his recipes. I will post more when I try them in the future and let you know.

On the Road Again :Beyond Bread, Eegee's and Mi Nidito

Beyond Bread on Urbanspoon

When I was in Tucson to visit friends we decided to eat at three places before going South to Sierra Vista. I was told that this restuarant Beyond Bread had a lot going for it. It sure does. All kinds of foods for breakfast, with very different “flavors”. It was difficult to select. I decided to take home the feta, spinach and onion bread to nosh on. I tried the potato pancakes and got their coffee. A little satisfying breakfast but the bread is “ the king”.

Eegee's on Urbanspoon

It was a hot day so we stopped in here. While they have subs, and much more we were going to get one of their signature frozen fruit drinks. My friend said there was a good was to quench my thirst and he ’t kidding. I got the mango like yellow one. It’s almost like a fruit shake, very smooth and very, very cold. Unlike any kind of dessert like beverage something like Wendy’s Frosty but icy and fruity. Quite an amazing. If you have not tried one, go out soon and try one.

Mi Nidito on Urbanspoon

My friends know how to pick good restaurants. As soon as I stepped inside I saw a photo of Bill Clinton. A bright decor, the place was packed. I had read that they made a plate for him that was named the President's Plate and I had to get it. It was a smorgasbord of many of the restaurant's tasty dishes . Not only did I have a chance to taste good food, I was able to try many of the offerings on one plate. They were all good, with good flavor, and tasty. A large flour tortilla wrapped around beans, green chili, avocado, cheese and tomato. Another amazing dish, was a very unusual Mango Chimichanga. The mango fruit inside the fried burrito was so good I later found a recipe to make it when I got back to Kansas City.

The Worst place I ever ate At

In 2003 I was in Las Vegas for my 2nd time and then 3rd. There are some nice places to eat like various ones at the Belagio. Amazing how much it cost $750 million wow.
I ate a real nice Mexican buffet in a casino hotel just off the strip near highway that featured all different types of salsas and great Mexican buffet (wish I could remember the name). It was so good I went to the place when I came back the next month. But there is one stinker restaurant that is one of my all time lousy restaurants.
Our friends took us to this restaurant with really lousy food . There were cars on the walls ceiling/ everywhere. Can you or someone find the name of the restaurant.I need to write about how lousy this place was. I can't do it justice if I don't know the know the name. Of all the places to go and they took me to that dump. I need to know if it still exists.
Any help appreciated . thanks
