Restaurant Finds: Wendy's

Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers on Urbanspoon

I've been eating at Wendy's for years. The Frost's are the best and "to die for". Recently I ate one ($1) during the 40 anniversary specials. It was good as ever. I wanted to compare their $1 double cheese burger and how it fares with other burgers in the current burger wars.

I am sorry to saw that both small patties were quite dry. There was no real taste to them so I was a little disappointed. While it is only $1, I expected at least some burger flavor.

Restaurant Finds: The President eats a burger

Ray's Hell-Burger on Urbanspoon Seems like 5 Guys has competition. The President and Vice President took a short trip to bite into this famous places 10 oz burger. I am not sure if either “ held the lettuce held the pickles” but they did pay with cash. Prices are cheap to say the latest and offer good bang for buck. Someday when I am near DC again, this will be a destination.

Restaurant Finds : "Five Guys Burger & Fries

Five Guys Burger & Fries on Urbanspoon Burgers are king but McDonald’s, Burger King and other burger places now have big competition in Olathe and around Kansas City. Five Guys has arrived and along with it, big lines to bite down on their gorgeous burgers. Every time I have peaked into this place, the line has been long out to the door. This time, I decided to take the “plunge” and see for myself how good these burgers really are.
While I was waiting in the long line, I got a handful of the free peanuts to munch on while the line dwindled down. It does not take long for the line to descend down to the counter. As I got closer, I gained a better understanding why people like to come here. People don’t mind the fact that the burgers are not grilled but fried with 100% peanut oil. I perused the 15 toppings that could be selected. You can have all of them if you want on your burger(s). I decided to try all of these except mayo, A-1, BBQ sauce and Hot sauce. My wife usually kids me that I always put these condiments on steak and other foods but not this time as I wanted a more pristine burger. I chose the big burger which is has two regular patties, which for only about a dollar then 1 patty, is more bang for the buck. I also nixed the cheese and the fries (which I was told many people like as they are freshly made and there is a cajun variety too) I stuck to my plan. I wanted the meat. While I was waiting for my order to be plated, I watched the assembly line. The jovial and pleasant burger masters were cooking the burgers in the back. These were then based to the table in the middle where the condiments were assembled. The the order with numbers are called and before you now it , you are ready to eat.
These burgers have won awards by Zagat (2001-2008), Voted Best Burger in Washington Magazine (1999- 2006) and more. So what I did I think about my burger. Well worth the price. Juicy, thick and beefy. I thought it should have a little extra flavor of some sort but I liked the condiments with it. I spoke to one woman and she preferred these burgers to the grilled burgers from different restaurants m (like Red Robin which I did not like). However, I still prefer a grilled char taste. But this one was very good and with the toppings, excellent. I can understand while these are very popular and while people are packing this place. I will compare these burgers to some others and will get back to you. If anyone else has comments, please send.

Overprices burgers , it's just not my type of place

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers on Urbanspoon One of my friends asked me to meet them at this restaurant for burgers. It wasn't my idea and you can bet that it won't be my idea on my on. Yes there are many type of burger combinations here but they are all way over priced. Yeah they come with fries (all you can eat?) but that does not excuse jacking up the prices so much. I had one of the lower prices burgers and got onion rings instead of the disgusting fries. Its a little noisy as there are always children which is fine but why drag them to this overpriced place ( just to eat more fatty fries?). I had a good time with my friends. I see this place from the road all the time but you can bet I won't be entered it. I have better places to eat. Sorry to be a downer on this review but "it just did not set well with me".

Backyard Burgers : great tasting burgers, reasonable prices locally

Back Yard Burgers on UrbanspoonWe don't go for fast food very often. The menu is wide and has a variety menu items with reasonable prices. The burgers are some of the best mostly because I like the grill flavor. Considering they are a chain but I feel that the burgers are on step above the ordinary burger at a good price. The charcoal like flavor and of course the taste are awesome . There are several different types which are unusual. The fries here are much crispier and flavorful ( I never have McDonald or other french fries) and worth every cent. When I was a good burger, at reasonable prices, I know where to find one of these locally literally in our backyard .

Ann Arbor, MI's Crazy Jim's Blimpy Burger

I lived in around Ann Arbor, Michigan from 1976-1981 before I left for Kansas. I got my master's degree in science education, was an assistant tennis coach and later taught science at several community college programs. I also like to eat, cooked and went to restaurants.

I was there a few years ago twice.

I was at Zingerman's which is fantastic and has so much to offer. We tried real good Mexican, Fish, Thai and more.

At one Mexican resturant, I remember I asked if they had hot sauces. They said sure and gave me a milk plastic crate with about 20 in them. I started trying a bunch of them . Not bad. Well... until one of them started to really hit me. I rushed the bathroom and sat on the toilet as sweat poured down my face for a minute. And then I was fine. But now for a memorable place that I did not visit.

Next time I am up there you can be sure I am going to Crazy Jim's

This website said what I saw on the food channel.
This website said echoed what I saw on the food channel.

"Crazy Jim's Blimpy Burger: Although not really a restaurant, no review on food in Ann Arbor would be complete without mentioning Blimpy's. Offering the greasiest and greatest burgers in Ann Arbor, this hamburger stand has a unique method of preparing its burger. Rather than making one large patty, Blimpy's makes several patties per burger.
When ordering, customers specify how many patties, beginning with double up to the quint burger. Crazy Jim's slogan is "Cheaper than food," and it is pretty cheap - five bucks will buy a triple burger, fries and a drink. But be careful - patrons have said that while eating, it is possible to feel your arteries tightening, and unofficial studies suggest that going more than once a month just could be detrimental to good health."

Next time I am up there you can be sure I am going to Crazy Jim's- I gotta try it.

Kobe beef- would you buy a $41 burger?

At a gourmet foods place in Overland Park, KS, I saw Kobe beef. My wife would kill me if I brought home a $31 steaks so I settled for the (cheap) $5 burger to bring home, cook and share. Meanwhile I have seen on the Food Channel and other blogs/websites (see links below) that people line up for the thicker $41 dollar Kobe beef burgers.
I know the cows are grain and beer fed and rubbed down so I looked for a little more information while the burger was cooking.
But is it good that people would "fork over" (pardon the pun) $41 dollars instead of buying 41 ($1 burgers) from McDonalds or Burger King or getting 5 quarter or half pounders from Ruby Tuesday or those other so called gourmet burer places?

I should have possibly seared it on both sides first but instead broiled it. Then I put in in between 2 bread slices (I thought about putting on a bagel but nahhh). I
tasted some of it as is and my wife said it was okay. It was very moist and had a distinctive meaty yet beefy taste. It was tender and smoother then a regular burger.

Well not bad. But what I kept on thinking was whether this new Gourmet foods place was going to sell Kobe and if so how much. Guess I will have to go back in a few weeks, ask and fine out.
